MUMBAI, INDIA, August 26, 2009: The state government on Tuesday approved the blueprint for the proposed statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the sea off Marine Drive, and began the process of appointing a developer for its construction, although it has yet to secure clearance from the Union environmental ministry.
The 321-foot-high monument less than a mile from the coast would not only top New York’s Statue of Liberty by a good 16 feet, but also be the world’s tallest. For now, however, its fate depends on coastal clearance.
[HPI note: Shivaji Raje Bhosle (February 19, 1627-April 3, 1680), was popularly known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His ideology of Indian Self Rule and subsequent expansion of the Maratha Empire was partly responsible for re-establishment of Hindu rule after various Muslim dynasties who ruled for several centuries.)
