CUDDALORE, TAMIL NADU, INDIA, September 23, 2009: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy will file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of the Madras High Court Division Bench upholding the takeover of the Chidambaram Natarajar Temple by the Tamil Nadu government.

Dr. Swamy and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders offered worship at the Natarajar temple on Tuesday.

When they were going around the temple a group of women belonging to the Podhu Dikshithars’ families and members of the Hindu Temples’ Protection Committee, led by Geetha Anbalagan, emotionally appealed to them to restore the temple to the Podhu Dikshithars.

VHP president, Mr. Singhal, said Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi should take note of the fact that in Karnataka the High Court had struck down the entire Hindu Religious Endowment Act in that State, holding it to be unconstitutional.

Dr Swamy said he would argue the case himself in the Supreme Court. He alleged that irregularities persisted in many temples run by the HR & CE Department. For instance, at Palayamkottai men have built houses on the Durgai Amman temple land. Dr. Swamy said that if there were doubts over the handling of the Chidambaram temple accounts, criminal proceedings could be initiated. The takeover was not the solution, he said.

The VHP plans a “temple liberation movement” across the country demanding that all temples be reverted to to the respective denominations or sects, said Mr. Singhal.
