UGANDA, October 4, 2004: On Sunday, September 27, Uganda’≥ Indian community concluded four days of festivities in honor of the Goddess Durga. Symbolising strength, femininity and motherhood, the eight-armed, trident-wielding Durga triumphs over evil and is one of Hinduism’≥ most popular Goddesses.br /br /She is especially revered by millions of Bengalis from Eastern India, who comprise many of Uganda’s Hindus. This is the second year that Uganda’≥ small Bengali community has organized the festivities in Kampala, at the Indian Association grounds on Nakasero Lane.br /br /The statue of the Goddess, created by Bengali artisans, was freighted in from Calcutta, India, as was a Hindu priest who recited prayers in Sanskrit. As per Hindu tradition, She was later immersed in water (Lake Victoria at Munyonyo) symbolizing the Deity’≥ return to the elements and primeval consciousness.
