UNITED KINGDOM, October 17, 2009: When I signed up for a “karma yoga” retreat in the tiny hamlet of Caudet in south-west France, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I imagined some gentle stretching, perhaps a bit of meditation on the benefits of karmic deeds. But I didn’t connect it with spending a morning lugging sandstone building blocks up a hill.

Karma yoga uses the concept of selfless service as one of its core tools: physical work done in a meditative way, focusing on the process rather than the outcome.

Aside from meditation, chanting and hatha yoga sessions, participants may be required to work in the large vegetable plots, shop in town for produce or help with the ongoing building projects. If your budget is short and you are not afraid to serve, karma yoga retreats are what you have been looking for.
