BALI, October 14, 2009: Balinese Hindus all over the country celebrated Galungan, a holyday to commemorate the victory of dharma over adharma. This holyday is considered the pinnacle of Balinese Hindus’ view of their struggle to subdue negative forces called sad ripu (six enemies of the within). They are kama (lust), loba (greed), krodha (anger), mada (drunkeness), moha (confusion) and matsarya (envy). It is a struggle to free our mind from influences that lead us to do various bad deeds.

For Balinese Hindus, though this struggle is carried out everyday, the ultimate battle occurs every year during three-day period before Galungan, when three personifications of evil come to the world successively. With proper spiritual practices, the Balinese believe they successfully keep them at bay and prepare for a positive future.
