UNITED KINGDOM, December 30, 2009: A group of corporate workers in the Indian city of Mumbai have launched a no-tie campaign to save energy and protect the environment. Campaigners say not wearing a tie will make people feel cooler with less need to use air conditioners so extensively.
Dhiraj Shrinivasan, co-founder of the “no Tie Campaign,” says the culture of wearing ties is British and alien to India. “We should wear clothes that are suitable to Indian climactic conditions like shirts or kurtas [long tunics].”
Another co-founder of the campaign, Sanjiv Vishwanathan, says that when people wear ties, the temperature is set at a lower degree. “We just want to plant a seed in their minds, to make them aware of environment-related issues.”
Earlier in September, Bangladesh ordered government employees to not wear suits and ties to ease the country’s energy shortage.
