CALIFORNIA, USA, April 4, 2010: Petals in the Dust: India’s Missing Girls is a documentary exploring why an estimated 50 million girls have been eliminated from India’s population in the last century.
The gender ratio of newborns worldwide is 1.05 boys for each girl, which is exactly the ratio for the United States, Argentina and France, for example. In India, the nation-wide ratio is 1.12 boys for each girl at birth. But in some areas it can be much more skewed. The district of Daman in Daman and Diu in the Western part of India has the most imbalanced ratio: 1.69 adult man for each woman.
The U.N. has warned that these acts if left unabated, the imbalance toward a male population would lead to an increase in trafficking, sexual abuse and violence towards women.
