PARIS, FRANCE, April 13, 2010: A new university library called BULAC (Bibliotheque Universitaire des Langues et Civilisations) is being started in Paris, in association with INALCO (Institute National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales). It will be the largest and most comprehensive library in France and possibly in Europe for the study of languages, literatures, social sciences and humanities of the Eastern world.

The library will open in September 2011 with more than 1.5 million volumes, a capacity of up to 2.5 million volumes, large access to digital and multimedia facilities, and a seating capacity of almost 900.

The library, of which the old Bibliotheque des Langues Orientales is a major component, already houses a substantial collection of books dealing with Sri Lankan culture, history, politics and economy, most of them in western languages, but a few of them in Pali, Sinhala and Tamil. It will become the reference library for Sri Lankan studies in Europe if it extends its collections, especially in Sinhala and Tamil, both languages which are being taught at INALCO. The Library and the Institute are keen to obtain copies of books in both languages published in Sri Lanka.
