SRINAGAR, INDIA, May 1, 2012 (ibn live): The Meteorological Department will establish three advanced warning systems (AWS) at Amarnath holy cave, Pahalgam and Baltal base camps to ensure better forecast of weather conditions for the smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra this year, a spokesman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) said after a high level meeting.

The establishment of AWS will provide a better and accurate prediction of likely weather on a given date, the spokesman said. He said the Met Department has also decided to install a weather display board at the Nunwan Base Camp as well as at Baltal Base Camp for the benefit of Yatris. “It was also decided that the Meteorological Department will provide instant warning regarding any
weather-related disturbances to all authorities concerned through SMS service”, he added.

Met Department Director Sonam Lotus, who attended the meeting, said the Department is in the process of establishing Doppler Radar at Srinagar for which the procurement process is at an advanced stage. “Once established, this will provide a huge facility for more accurate weather prediction in the Kashmir valley. This will benefit not only the Yatra but also the general public in Kashmir Valley throughout the year”, Lotus said.
