JAKARTA, INDONESIA, July 21, 2025 (indoindians.com, reposted with correct URLs): Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is widely recognised for its urban sprawl and bustling activity. However, beneath its metropolitan surface lies a rich tapestry of religious and cultural expressions. One of the latest additions to this diverse landscape is the Jakarta Murugan Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, which was officially opened to the public on February 2, 2025. Situated in Kalideres, West Jakarta, this newly constructed place of worship is dedicated to Lord Murugan, a revered Deity in Tamil Hindu tradition. The temple, including the development of facilities, are fully funded from donations and contributions from devotees and the community. The temple not only serves the needs of Jakarta’s Tamil Hindu community but also welcomes the broader public interested in learning about spirituality, culture, and interfaith harmony.

The temple is a remarkable symbol of Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam, reflecting the values of Hinduism, peace, devotion, and knowledge. Dr A.S. Kobalen, who led the temple development team, explained that the idea was conceived years ago to establish a sacred space for the Tamil Hindu community. “We sought the support of the Jakarta government to provide the land,” said Dr Kobalen, as reported by Kompas. “After a long process, we are grateful that this cultural and religious facility can now be enjoyed by all.” Despite being located in a predominantly Muslim country, the presence of the Jakarta Murugan Temple reflects Indonesia’s deep commitment to tolerance and diversity. The temple is temporarily closed to general visitors due to ongoing work to complete the finishing touches on the building.
