BENGALURU, INDIA, December 10, 2025 (Mathrubhumi): The historic Halasuru Someshwara Swamy Temple has stopped conducting weddings on its premises after priests said they were repeatedly dragged into court during divorce cases. The decision came to light after a man approached the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), claiming that the temple refused to solemnize his marriage. When the CMO sought an explanation, temple authorities clarified that they had halted wedding ceremonies several years ago to avoid legal complications. The centuries-old temple, one of Bengaluru’s most visited heritage shrines, had long been a popular venue for marriages. However, officials said the number of couples returning to the temple seeking verification during separation had surged in recent years.
According to a report by The Indian Express, priests were often summoned to court during divorce proceedings, creating inconvenience and affecting temple operations. Temple committee chief administrative officer V. Govindaraju said many couples who eloped used fake documents to get married at the temple. “Soon after, their families would arrive, and in some cases, legal disputes followed. Courts would then direct priests to appear before them,” he said. Officials confirmed that the temple conducted nearly 100 to 150 weddings before halting the practice about six to seven years ago. The decision, they said, was made to avoid “untoward incidents” that could damage the temple’s reputation. The temple functions under the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department of the Karnataka government.
