TAMIL, NADU, INDIA, January 28, 2026 (The Hindu): Thousands of devotees from various parts of Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and Sivaganga districts are on padayatra (pilgrimage on foot) towards Sri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple in Palani for the Thai Poosam festival which is scheduled on February 1. Men, women and children were seen walking along the road early in the morning carrying wooden kavadis with peacock feathers on their shoulders as part of fulfilling their vows. They will reach Palani on February 1. Volunteers provided food, drinking water and tender coconuts to the devotees. Arrangements are being made by officials for the smooth conduct of the Thai Poosam festival. The devotees will be provided with annadhanam, drinking water, toilet facilities, medical assistance and accommodation during the event.

Thai Poosam festival at Sri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, one of the six holy abodes of Lord Murugan, began with the hoisting of the holy flag at Periyanayaki Amman Temple on January 26. The holy flag was hoisted amidst the chanting of hymns and special pujas were conducted to the Deity and the kodimaram (flag mast). The celestial wedding will take place on January 31. On the following day, Thai Poosam will be celebrated. It will be followed by the holy car festival. The festival will conclude on February 4 with the Theppa Ther the officials said.
