UNITED STATES, April 30, 2026 (CoHNA by Pranav Shrivastava): Numbers. They’re everywhere. In your phone, your favorite video game, even in the rhythm of a song. But did you know that some of the most powerful ideas in math came from ancient India, from thinkers who lived thousands of years before calculators or computers? That blew my mind—and it changed the way I see my culture. It all started a few weeks ago, when I was looking at a textbook in my AP World History class. It was a thick, leather-bound volume with hundreds of pages covering times from the beginning of civilization to the present day. On page five-hundred and fifty-five, there was a chapter on ancient India. Because India was a country I am fascinated with, my curiosity peaked and I decided to read further. I had always known that India had invented the number zero, pi, and many others. One thing disappointed me, however. The author claimed that India’s invention of the number zero was a mistake, an accident; it was a fact that I could not believe. This led me down a rabbithole of library books, online archives, and research papers too long for most to find interest in.

Let’s start with the superstar: zero. Sounds simple, right? A circle. Nothing. But zero was a game-changer. Before Indian mathematicians invented it, people didn’t have a way to represent “nothing” in calculations. What made this possible wasn’t just clever arithmetic—it was also a philosophical mindset. In Dharmic traditions like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, the concept of shunya, or emptiness, treated “nothingness” as a meaningful, even powerful idea. Imagine trying to do algebra, calculus, or even basic accounting without zero. Impossible! Brahmagupta, an Indian mathematician from the 7th century, not only gave zero a symbol, he gave it rules. That little circle? It literally changed the world. Then there’s the decimal system—the numbers we write today. Place values, tens, hundreds, thousands—all thanks to Indian scholars like Aryabhata. Without their brilliance, we’d still be stuck with clunky number systems that make math a nightmare. And let’s not forget trigonometry, algebra, negative numbers, and more. All these “modern” ideas were being explored in India centuries ago.
