MADURAI, INDIA, May 4 (The HIndu): The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered notice of admission on a writ petition seeking a direction to the State government to forbear Nityananda from acting as the 293rd ‘Guru Maha Sannidhanam’ of the Madurai Adheenam by holding his appointment as illegal.
A Vacation Bench comprising Justices C.S. Karnan and K. Ravichandra Baabu also ordered that status quo be maintained with regard to the protection of the mutt property.
The petitioner said the appointment of Nityananda was contrary to the letter and spirit of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act. He was “absolutely incompetent” to hold the post which was being held in reverence all over the world by Saivites. Several criminal cases were pending against him. He had been accused of sexual abuse. Therefore, to safeguard the assets of the adheenam and for the betterment of the Saivite cause, the petitioner said he was constrained to file the petition.
