COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, September 2, 2006: On September 15 and 16, 2006, the Pacific Symphony, Carl St. Clair conductor, is inaugurating its new home in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, California. On Saturday, September 16, 2006, the orchestra will debut Philip Glass’ The Passion of Ramakrishna, a tribute to the 19th century Indian mystic Sri Ramakrishna, commissioned by the Pacific Symphony. Besides this latest work, Mr. Glass also composed Satyagraha, an opera in semi-narrative form that deals with Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and his development of nonviolent protest into a political tool. Each act is dominated by a single historic figure overlooking the action from above. Indian poet Ravendranath Tagore is featured in Act 1.
