KAUAI, HAWAII, October 16, 2006: We want to assure everyone that other than unusual tremors for a moment yesterday morning, our island of Kauai was not affected by the earthquake that took place off the “Big Island” of Hawaii at the southern end of our island chain. For those outside here, we had the unusual experience of trees shaking on a windless day, dropping the water they held from last night’s rain. Those inside felt the building rock and the windows creak. Damage did occur on the islands of Hawaii and Maui, close to the epicenter of the 6.7 magnitude quake, which was followed by a 6.0 quake seven minutes later. The island of Hawaii, with its two active volcanoes, continues to rumble with more than 80 aftershocks in 24 hours. Oahu suffered almost complete loss of power, which snarled the Honolulu airport. But we are fine on Kauai. It’s been 20 years since our last earthquake.
