NEW DELHI, INDIA, July 17, 2006: In an official press release, Shri Nirmal Singh, Secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, and Shri Pavan K Varma, Director General the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, announce they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the Indian cultural arts overseas. The Memorandum of Understanding’s goal is to exchange visits by Indian art groups, diaspora scholars and academicians, organize seminars concerning the Indian diaspora, award cultural scholarships for children of overseas Indians and encourage academic chairs in foreign universities in the field of diaspora studies, Indian history and culture. The program will be publicized by the Ministry through the Indian Missions and Posts, ethnic media and overseas Indian Associations. The Ministry website (here) will post the programs partnered with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. According to the Ministry there are approximately 25 million Indians living abroad.
