NEW DELHI, INDIA, October 22, 2006: Diwali, the festival of lights, is being celebrated across India. Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated over a period of five days, and Saturday was Lakshmi Puja, a day when prayers are offered to the goddess of wealth. While festivals are a time to worship the divine and celebrate with family and friends, they are also a time when the crime branch and police have to be extra vigilant, and this year has been no exception. The Punjab police have reportedly intercepted messages of militants who had planned terrorist strikes in Punjab this Diwali. Security has now been tightened in and around Amritsar and Gurdaspur as the police are not willing to take any chances.
