UNITED KINGDOM, July 21, 2025 (FSSPX News): This is the first time since modern records began that less than half of the UK’s population is recorded as Christian. The latest census, in 2021, revealed that 46.5% of residents identified as Christian, while 37.8% claimed to have no religion. Islam (6%) and Hinduism (1.6%) rounded out the top three most represented denominations. The census does not provide information on the religious practice of adherents, but according to the latest available studies, only one in twelve Anglicans attend Sunday worship. Among Catholics, the percentage is higher, but only one in nine attends Sunday Mass. In contrast, six out of ten Muslims regularly attend their mosque, particularly on Fridays. For Hindus, it is more difficult to determine the figures, as a large proportion of worship is conducted at home.

The proportion of Christians has fallen by 13 percentage points since 2011 in England and Wales, where it was 59%. Two decades ago, it was around 72%. 25.3 million people identify as “no religion,” compared to 14.1 million ten years ago. This trend is particularly marked among those under 40. Muslims and Hindus are slightly on the rise: Islam has risen from 4.4% to 6% and Hinduism from 1.3% to 1.6%, driven by immigration and higher birth rates within these communities. If the rates of abandonment of Christianity and the rise of the “non-religious” continue, the 2031 census could place the “non-religious” category at around 45 to 48% and reduce Christianity to less than 40%. “The United Kingdom is moving towards a religious ecosystem where no single identity will be dominant and where plurality, including the right not to believe, will be the cultural norm,” concludes the sociologist Stephen Bullivant.
