KAUAI, HAWAII, July 1, 2026 (Hinduism Today): An Educational Insight examines “Positive Discipline,” a system for raising children through encouragement, love and respect rather than physical punishment, blame or shame. Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami became concerned about corporal punishment among Hindu families in the 1990s and sought practical methods parents could use to discipline children without violence. He subsequently encountered the work of educator Dr. Jane Nelsen and encouraged parents in his congregation to study and teach her Positive Discipline system.

The approach seeks to develop self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation and problem-solving skills while maintaining respect for the child. The article connects these methods with the Hindu principle of ahimsa, arguing that noninjury should apply physically, mentally and emotionally within the parent-child relationship. It presents 14 strategies designed to give parents practical alternatives to punitive discipline.
