MYSORE, INDIA, January 30, 2004: The three-day triennial sixth “Kumbha Mela” of South India at Triveni Sangama of rivers Cauvery, Kapila and Guptagamini near Tirumakudalu Narsipura will begin on February 4 coinciding with the full moon day of Magha Masha. The holy dip will occur on February 6 on the full moon day. More than 500,000 devotees are expected to take a holy dip on Magha Poornima — the final day of the Kumbha Mela which is turning more attractive for the people in the south. This year’s Kumbha Mela achieves greater significance because of the prevailing drought in the region as this holy occasion is used to propitiate rain God and the other Gods praying for bountiful of rains in the coming days. Special fire ceremonies have been organized at the Kumbha Mela to propitiate and invoke the blessing of Gods and Goddesses. A “Dharma Sabha” is planned for February 6 in which sadhus, sants and heads of various maths and sects are expected to participate. The Kumbha Mela, a joint effort of various ashrams from the area, is intended to restore peace and amity in the society, besides being giving a cultural touch to the celebrations.
