MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, September 29, 2004: Jay Lakhani (“source”) reports from the UK:
“Over 500 Hindu youth got together at the Gita Bhavan Mandir in Manchester at the start of the new academic year. Students from five universities/colleges in the Manchester area were invited for a Hindu presentation and dinner. The venue was filled to capacity, some students had to stand in the corridor outside. The event began with invocations to Ganesh and Saraswati. I offered a short presentation on Hinduism and Education. I suggested that the reason why Hindu students excel in academic and professional fields is due to their religious background. This may sound strange, but there is a very crucial link between the two. Education does not mean acquiring facts, but it means disciplining the mind. It is our capacity to make the mind one pointed and focused, that allows knowledge to spring up from within. Our religion has emphasized the importance of ‘discipline’ as the key requirement for success in any field, secular or spiritual, and it is this element of our religious background that comes to our aid when we pursue an academic career. I could not let these youngsters get away without taking this issue further and saying that the greatest distraction they will face when pursuing their academic work is going to be gender attraction. They will discover that unless they learn to ‘master themselves’ they will not succeed in mastering their field. The task will be difficult, but they have to rise up to the challenge, and in spite of peer pressure, stand back and maintain their dignified stance.”
