KATHMANDU, NEPAL, October 18, 2004: Nepal Government today announced a temporary suspension of military action against Maoists in response to the rebels’ offer of a truce during Dusshera festival. “There will be no offensive from our side… If there is any sabotage against us and if anyone tries to disturb peace the government will be on high alert to maintain peace,” Nepal’s Information and Communication Minister Mohammad Mohsin told reporters. The Government did not specify the timeframe of the truce but the festival in the Kingdom will continue till mid-November. The Nepalese Government’s decision comes four days after the Maoists announced a unilateral ceasefire. The CPN-Maoist President Pushpa Kamal Dahal popularly known as Prachanda had issued a statement on Friday saying the party would halt all military activities for nine days during the Hindu festival. “The Government takes positively the Maoists’ announcement to temporarily halt military activities and asks the rebels not to avoid dialogue but to honestly come forward for dialogue to resolve the problems peacefully,” Mohsin said.
