WITHINGTON, ENGLAND, October 16, 2004: A Hindu temple in Withington will be closed for five months after fire swept through the building. The blaze broke out at Gandhi Hall, Brunswick Road, in the early hours of Friday, October 15. It caused damage to 20 percent of the building. Part of the roof and an area devoted to the three Goddesses, Dugra, Lakshimi and Saraswati were destroyed. Ashit Sinha, community coordinator for the Greater Manchester Bengali Hindu Cultural Association, said: “The whole Indian community were very distressed and devastated with the news. People were crying when they found out the Goddesses had been destroyed. At the moment we are setting up an emergency group to try and get the Goddesses replaced and get the temple back up and running as quickly as possible.” The fire struck during the nine day festival of Navratri. It is not known what caused the blaze but fire officers believe it may have been caused by a candle.
