VELLORE, INDIA, November 14, 2004: Head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who has been arrested and incarcerated in the central prison in Vellore in connection with a murder case, was maintaining good health, prison sources said on Sunday. He spent his third day in the prison meditating and performing pujas, the sources informed. The seer woke up as usual at 06:00 a.m. and had his bath after which he spent long hours in reciting the Gayatri Mandiram and performing the Chandramouleeswarar puja (worship). Like on Saturday, the seer had curd rice at around 11:30 p.m., after which prison doctor A. Kumaresan examined his health condition. The doctor said basic parameters like sugar level (HPI adds: some reports said he is diabetic) and blood pressure were normal. “The seer is maintaining good health. He is hale and hearty,” prison sources said quoting the physician.

The seer spent most of his time in meditation. Only Krishna Swamy, an ardent devotee of the Acharya and an advocate in the Madras High court, was given special permission to call on him. The prison authorities have kept a board outside the prison, stating that Saturday and Sunday being holidays, no visitors would be allowed. In a brief chat with newspersons outside the prison premises, the advocate turned emotional and said in a choked voice: “I broke down on seeing the seer. The Acharya consoled me and offered vibhuti (holy ash) and Kumkum prasadams.” When the seer asked him as to how people felt about his arrest, he told him that they were plunged in sorrow. The seer also enquired about the situation in the mutt. The advocate took leave after offering the prasadams from the Kanchi Kamatchi Amman temple. He also offered him apples, plantains and pomegranates.
