AMRITSAR, INDIA, November 14, 2004: The Shankaracharya’s arrest has widened the gulf in an already divided NDA. The Sangh parivar has already been on the offensive ever since the Shankaracharya was sent to jail. Now BJP President L. K. Advani has hinted that there was politics behind the entire episode. “The Supreme Court has issued guidelines which outline the manner in which a person can and cannot be arrested. In this case it appears that things were done in haste and under pressure,” he said. “The Shankaracharya is not someone who is capable of going underground. As far as the facts of the case are concerned, the matter is before the courts,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made it clear that the Centre had no role in the arrest of the Shankaracharya. He also dismissed the charge that the action against the seer was done at the instance of the UPA government. “The Centre has no role in the arrest. It is not correct to say that we had a role,” he said. “To say the least, it is not our concern,” Singh told reporters.
