KANCHEEPURAM, INDIA, November 13, 2004: After a couple of months of apparent lull, the police now maintain that they did not want to reveal all their cards prematurely and hence their reticence on the progress in the investigation of the Sankararaman murder case, says this article. The police have arrested 14 persons who “confessed” that they had been engaged by Kanchi Sankaracharya to kill Sankararaman. The police also claim to have recorded the conversations some of them had had with the junior pontiff Vijayendra Saraswathi’s brother, Raghu, on cellphone over the last two months. Last month five other people surrendered before the George Town Judicial Magistrate Court and confessed to the crime. The police did not believe them, and later they told the police that they had been paid around US$ 1,330 each by Raghu to confess to the crime and thus deflect the investigation away from the Kamakoti Peetam.
Police picked up Raghu and the Mutt manager Sundaresan on Wednesday evening. During questioning, they are believed to have maintained that they had engaged the murder squad on the Acharya’s instructions, continues the article. Cuddalore Superintendent of Police Prem Kumar told journalists that police had in its possession several incriminating documents linking the Acharya to the murder. He said the police did not suspect Vijayendra Saraswathi in the case.
