MADURAI, TAMIL NADU, November 27, 2004: Tamil teachers from Singapore and Malaysia attending an orientation program at Madurai Kamaraj University were given positive direction by keynote speaker K. Kalimuthu. Kalimuthu pointed out, “Tamil culture is preserved, despite external influences, only because of an active role played by women, who are its backbone. Our women always believe in the richness, tradition, practices, habits and customs of the land.” The news release adds, “Describing Tirukkural as the basis of the Tamil culture, the speaker recalled the observation of K. A. P. Viswanatham that ‘Tirukkural introduces Tamil to the world, and the people abroad come here only after reading it.’ The people here had been advocating a global outlook for hundreds of centuries and all Tamil texts carried a global message.” Mr. Kalimuthu thanked the teachers for coming to Tamil Nadu to deepen their understanding of the culture and its practises.
