KAULA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, January 14, 2005: About 20 Malaysian Volunteers from various Hindu Organizations are now actively involved in their services especially in Baticola, Ampara and Trincomalee areas in Sri Lanka. Mr. T. M.Ramachandran of the Hindu Seva Sangam (HSS), popularly known as Ramaji, as mobilized about 1,000 youths of local Hindu Seva Sangam in those areas. Rama has commented that there is an urgent need for raincoats, hand phones, safety boots for these volunteers so that bad weather will not hamper their work. He has also requested for more food, medical products and water purifiers. In the meantime, Mr. P. Waythamoorthy of Vivekananda Youth Movement Seremban is busily coordinating between Rama’s group and other local groups in purchasing and supplying essential needs to rehabilitate the victims. He also says that there is an urgent need for sanitary facilities, water filters, undergarments for both men and women, baby feeding bottles, and milk powder for babies and children.
Moorthy is very concerned with the depressed feelings of many of the victims and he says that doctors and physicians including psychologists and counselors are urgently needed in Baticola and Ampara areas. He also commented that LTTE workers are efficiently carrying out their duty in the North and North East of Sri Lanka. A squad of medical doctors, nurses and volunteers led by Dr.Ganesan are carrying out their duties through the Chinmaya Mission in Tricomalee and Baticola areas. Mr. Athi Sivan is coordinating all the movements of medical volunteers from Malaysia and Sri Lanka. At the same time, Mr. Gunaraj of the Rudra Devi Samaj Malaysia is actively involved with his assistance in providing single toilets and other essential facilities with the funds through the Rudra Devi Samaj.
MHS is now liaising with Mr. Pasupathy of the Tsunami Relief Group at the Vivekananda Ashram to work together in further rehabilitation work. Similar efforts is being made by a group from Sathya Sai Council to visit Acheh and few medical officials are now there trying to work out with the authorities to assign medical team.
