COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, January 19, 2004: Patrick Harrigan of the Living Heritage Disaster Relief Mission in Sri Lanka, “source,” sent out the following appeal:

There is an urgent need for English-speaking volunteers who can work in office environments drafting local relief proposals (also a long-term task) and teaching computer skills to young local volunteers in Kalmunai, Batticaloa and other population centers. If you have computer skills, secretarial skills and/or experience in office administration, then your services are needed here. For further details, write directly to Living Heritage Disaster Relief Coordinator Patrick Harrigan at editor@kataragama.org

If you are a Tamil speaker, your services are even more vitally needed here, especially if you bring some additional expertise like experience with computers, social development, medical practice, or building construction.

The following is a list of Sri Lankan NGOs that will accept or place foreign volunteers

AERO, Ampara Economic Recovery Organisation, based in Kalmunai, has need for project proposal writers, office administrators, and people with working knowledge of computer applications who can train others.

IMPACT will provide you with a paid translator and put you at sites where they are especially busy building sanitary facilities (public lavatories to prevent an expected surge in disease due to unsanitary conditions). In addition to paying your way here, each volunteer should plan to come with at least US$1,000 to cover his or her cost of staying here.

The time for urgent need of clothing is now past. If you wish to contribute clothing items, those that will be used are: New unused clothing, especially women’s underwear; childrens’ clothing/ bed sheets. Everywhere the women now living in refugee camps need (but are too shy to ask for) sanitary napkins; this is needed everywhere in quantities. Everywhere, refugees are asking that donors also send condiments (masalas). Probably the greatest need is for canned fish. As coastal villagers tell us, just a little bit of fish is enough to make a tasty rice meal, while vegetables are too costly.
