KOCHI, INDIA, February 23, 2005: Spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi was today conferred with the Rotary International Centenary Legendary Award for her service to humanity, international understanding and peace. Speaking after receiving the award here, she said happiness and contentment can prevail in people’s lives only if they uphold love, trust and service, based on an understanding of the other person’s needs. She said the almighty is the pure consciousness that dwells in everything. “Understanding this truth, we should learn to love everyone equally.” On the increasing suicide rate in Kerala, a state with high literacy level, she said it was “a matter of concern.” A study should be conducted in each village to find out the reason behind people taking such extreme steps and a solution found, she added.
