MANGALORE, INDIA, September 10, 2008: State primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri told teachers today that the prevailing Lord Macaulay Education System in India should be abandoned.

Addressing the gathering at a one-day seminar for teachers at Swami Vivekananda Auditorium, Kageri said that the present education system is responsible to the chaos in the society and it can be counteracted only through the traditional (pre-Macaulay) Indian education system. Stressing the importance of proper conduct, he added, “Parents should send their children to the value-based education implemented schools instead of sending to branded schools.” Kageri asked teachers to impart the values and teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramhamsa to the children, stating that teachers are the assets of the nation who mold its future citizens.

[HPI note: Lord Macaulay said in his “Minute on Indian Education,” in 1835: “We must form a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect.”]
