NEW DELHI, INDIA, September 30, 2008: Fruit prices have jumped–some by nearly 46 per cent–on expectations of increased consumption during the ongoing Navratri celebrations. Traditionally, people fast during the nine days of this festival, replacing other items in their diet with fruit.

Because the increased demand is so predictable, prices start increasing several days before the start of the festival; but they fall back to normal levels afterwards.
