NEW DELHI, INDIA, October 21, 2008: Various political parties on Monday asked for nation-wide caste census in 2011, saying such a move would bring clarity on the issue of protecting the “backward castes.”
Recently, the Supreme Court observed that without comprehensive and scientific data regarding different sections of the population the Government cannot bring statutory amendments for reservation in jobs and education. “If the caste-wise census is undertaken, the data will help us to form an idea about the level of development, handicap, poverty level of different castes,” a politician, S. Ramadoss, said.
