WASHINGTON, D.C., November 7, 2008: While dealing with the financial crisis, the US Congress has also passed an extension of the Religious Worker Visa Program under which most Hindu priests and temple builders (silpis) are in the US. The extension requires “the Secretary of Homeland Security to issue final regulations to eliminate or reduce fraud in special immigrant categories.” A first set of proposed regulations caused a great reaction across the religious community of America, including from Hindu temples. Anyone concerned with this visa should read the report at the URL above and closely track the issuance of the new regulations and be prepared to issue comments on them.
