MALAYSIA, January 15, 2009: The state government will come up with a mechanism for regular checks on caves. The safety concern became urgent after Perak Cave Temple security guard Yip Lum Choon, 55, was believed to have been killed following a rockfall at the cave.
In the meantime, it wants temple committees operating from inside caves, or near them, to start checking for cracks. “If they find cracks, they must vacate the caves immediately and inform the state government,” said senior executive councillor Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham.
Speaking to reporters here yesterday after the weekly exco meeting chaired by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, Ngeh said there would be a meeting with such temple committees soon. Ngeh said the government did not plan to close down all cave temples while checks were being carried out.
