TRINIDAD, May 8, 2009: Ruling on a case brought by the Muslims and Hindus of Trinidad and Tobago, the Privy Council has ruled that the Trinity Cross, a national medal of honor, is unconstitutional because its Christian symbolism violates the nation’s right to equality and freedom of belief. The award, initiated 40 years ago for distinguished service and bravery, will be withdrawn; but the 62 individuals already awarded the cross will retain it.
In the Privy Council judgement, Lord Hope of Craighead said the Trinity Cross was “perceived by Hindus and Muslims living in Trinidad and Tobago as an overtly Christian symbol both in name and in substance.” He said that it breached the islands’ Constitution of 1976.
A parliamentary review of British honors has recommended streamlining the system with new titles that have no reference to Christian saints or symbols.
