PAKISTAN, July 7, 2009: Of the 300 Hindu temples that Pakistan inherited in the 1947 partition, hardly three dozen have managed to survive. Many of these are in ruins and will eventually disappear if not maintained; but for unknown reasons, the Pakistan government is not allowing local Hindus to look after their desolate temples.
After the historic Babri Mosque in India was destroyed in 1992 by a Hindu mob, over 200 Hindu temples were destroyed across Pakistan by angry Muslims, sparking the largest outward migration of the Hindu community since Partition. The Hindus who still live in Pakistan–over 2 million–continue to suffer constant threats against their security, property and lives by extremists. Due to public apathy, they remain a forgotten and voiceless people who must live a low-profile existence.
