HYDERABAD, INDIA, August 26, 2009: The Andhra assembly adopted a resolution yesterday urging the adoption of a constitutional amendment to extend scheduled caste status to Dalit Christians, giving them the same political rights and socio-economic and educational benefits as other scheduled castes
The Andhra Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party said that the state government’s move was against the constitution and threatened to launch an agitation against it. BJP state president Bandaru Dattatreya said the Supreme Court had observed in 1986 that the facilities extended under the constitution to SCs could not be extended to those who left Hinduism.
