CUTTACK, ORISSA, September 11, 2009: This year Dusherra in Orissa means addition of more gold and silver in the “medhas” — silver-made backgrounds behind the Durga deity made specially for this celebration.

Across the city around 154 puja committees observe the festival, but only a few have silver “medhas.”

The Binod Behari puja committee, the oldest committee in the city, has added 22 lbs. of silver in its medha. The silver medha was built in 2002 with an investment of US$92,000 but this year the committee decided to enhance the “medha” and made some changes with the additional silver.

“This year our puja committee has completed 500 years, so we wanted to make some changes in the medha,” said, Surya Kant, president of Binod Behari puja committee.
