HUALIEN COUNTY, TAIWAN, October 14, 2009: Cambodia and Myanmar Traditional Puppet Show was proudly presented on October 14 – 16, at the Hualien County Cultural Affairs Bureau in Taiwan. After years of hard work, the Shadow Puppet Show was listed by UNESCO as part of the “Oral and Intangible Heritage” of the world.

The shadow-puppet stories are most based on the epic poems of Ramayana. Large puppets are as tall as half of an adult. Common characters include those famous in the Hindu epic — a prince, princess, demons, nature spirits, the monkey God Hanuman, peasants and ascetic monks. The tall puppets dance and fight with one another behind the scenes as manipulated by the puppeteers, and their shadows are projected.
