More than a million converged at the Sri Subramaniaswamy temple in Batu Caves, the main venue for the celebrations. Many visitors, including about 100,000 tourists, were at the temple before dawn to participate in the ceremonies as were the thousands of others at temples nationwide. Taking advantage of the large turnout, various nongovernmental organizations set up booths to promote their cause and collect donations.
