Reports of the Bengal famine of 1770 and the East India Company’s conduct circulated in the American colonies, reinforcing fears of British rule. In 1773, John Dickinson warned that the Company’s abuses in Asia foreshadowed what Americans might face. Fighting began at Lexington and Concord in April 1775. The American victory at Saratoga in 1777 helped secure an alliance with France the following year. But Britain also faced challenges elsewhere, including a military crisis in India that historian Steven Pincus argues helped shape the outcome in America.

In 1779, British forces seized the French port of Mahé on India’s Malabar coast, provoking Mysore’s ruler, Haidar Ali, who regarded the port as under his protection. In July 1780, he invaded the Carnatic region with an army estimated at 80,000. On September 10, his forces and those of his son, Tipu Sultan, overwhelmed an East India Company force of approximately 3,700 European and Indian troops at Pollilur, killing or capturing most of them. It was one of the Company’s worst military defeats in India. According to Pincus, a University of Chicago historian, the resulting crisis prompted Britain to redirect troops intended as reinforcements for North America to India, along with naval resources. He argues that these competing demands helped weaken Britain’s position in the American war. In October 1781, American and French forces secured the decisive victory at Yorktown, where French control of the Chesapeake Bay prevented British relief or escape. India’s contribution was thus indirect but significant: accounts of suffering in Bengal strengthened American opposition to British power, while military resistance in Mysore placed additional demands on Britain’s forces during a crucial stage of the war.

Much more of this history at source.

https://indiacurrents.com/how-india-influenced-the-us-rebellion-against-the-british-250-years-ago/

UNITED STATES, October 27, 2026 (India Currents): July 4 marked the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence, an occasion,…

[1

post-23529","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
