This widens the earlier rule, under which non-Hindus had to declare faith in the Deity and accept temple customs only to go beyond the flagstaff. The declaration must follow the format prescribed by each temple. The order is not a blanket ban on everyone wearing another faith’s markers, but it does clarify that a non-Hindu who keeps wearing such symbols may enter but only after signing the undertaking.

A Division Bench of Justices GR Swaminathan and P Murugan passed the order on a plea seeking enforcement of temple entry laws and Agamic rules. Citing a social media video purportedly showing people in skull caps entering the Arunachaleswarar temple in Tiruvannamalai despite devotees’ protests, the judges faulted the temple staff for remaining “mute spectators.” The court also mentioned Madurai Central MLA Badrudeen Mustafa entering the Meenakshi temple after the election, citing a right to inspect amenities, and climbing its towers during the Kumbabishekam. It further noted a Christian minister visiting the Tiruchendur temple without the required undertaking. In contrast, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, a Christian, worshiped at the Meenakshi temple after signing an undertaking. The judges said he was asked only to affirm reverence, not convert, calling it an “inclusive approach”. The ruling applies only to Agamic temples, the court said, noting that shrines like those of Ayyappa and Shirdi Sai Baba draw devotees from all faiths.

https://swarajyamag.com/news-brief/madras-high-court-bars-non-hindus-wearing-other-faith-symbols-from-entering-agamic-temples

INDIA, October 28, 2026 (Swarajyamag): The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ruled that non-Hindus wearing symbols of,…

[1

post-23542","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
