According to information available with the teachers’ forum, Savara Aenamma, a student in Sagaramjugudupalle of Sitampet in Srikakulam district, was made to do 150 sit-ups as punishment for not wearing the school uniform on June 26. The girl’s pleas with the teacher that she was ill fell on deaf ears. Venamma was admitted to the hospital where she died on June 29. In the second case, K. Lakshmaiah, of Balmuru mandal primary school in Mahbubnagar district, was beaten up and faced harassment from the class teacher and the headmaster for not paying fees and purchasing the school uniform. Since his parents are poor and could not meet the requirement, he chose to end his life by hanging from a tree in the village on June 21. In the third case, a student of Mandal Parishad school in Pattikonda of Kurnool district, went into shock after he was beaten by the school teacher for not buying textbooks.

Teachers’ Forum for Liberation of Child Labour, which collects data of such incidents from all over the State, launched a campaign among the teachers’ unions pressing for the need to reorient teachers against awarding corporal punishment. Forum convener E. Anjaiah demanded that the government take up the issue immediately. United Teachers’ Federation general secretary K. Narayana said the Union had posted a discussion on these issues for July 19. “Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy will attend the meeting and we will represent the matter to him,” he said. Joint secretary in the school education department Ramesh K. Suman, when contacted by the Deccan Chronicle, said the department would seek a report from the district officers and initiate action. “Since the information we have received is not through official channels, we will enquire objectively. If the teachers are at fault, we have to award them punishment. Whatever be the conditions, a teacher is not supposed to award corporal punishment to children,” he said.

Deccan ChronicleHYDERABAD, INDIA, July 5, 2004: Corporal punishment is blamed for taking the lives of two school students, besides leaving,…

[1

post-4346","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
