A delegation comprising senior servitors, officials of the district administration led by temple Chief Administrator S. C. Mohapatra, which recently visited Baba Vaidyanath Temple, has suggested installation of an electronic security system for Jagannath temple. The existing security arrangement of Jagannath Temple has proved inadequate as a number of times people have breached it and scaled the temple pinnacle evading security personnel. The loopholes in the security system were also exposed in 2002 when miscreants had broken open the temple door and taken away Madan Mohan, an icon of Lord Jagannath. The temple authorities still use clay and mortar to seal the doors every night. Even for &#8220;protecting&#8221; the temple treasury, which houses gold ornaments weighing more than 200 kg., an 800-year-old locking system with timber bolt and iron is used which has become obsolete. Deputy S. P. Chakradhar Mohapatra, who is in-charge of temple security, said 49 police personnel are deployed on daily duty for the temple. Besides, 51 armed personnel of Orissa State Armed Police guard all the four gates of the temple in three shifts. This strength, however, is far below the requirement as on a particular shift only about 20 to 25 security personnel are found available for duty, Mohapatra said.
