Sharma, a professor of comparative religion at McGill University, is the president of a five-day World Congress on World&#8217;s Religions After Sept. 11. It will open on the fifth anniversary of the World Trade Center disaster. He hopes the conference can accomplish at least two things: show that religions still have a positive contribution to make to human rights, and refine and gather support for a Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the World&#8217;s Religions. Such a statement would complement the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948 and also, perhaps, rectify some of its biases, says this article. Four Nobel peace laureates&#8211;the Dalai Lama, South Africa&#8217;s Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bishop Carlos Belo, former Catholic bishop of Timor-Leste, and lawyer Shirin Ebadi of Iran&#8211;have expressed their support for it. The conference will explore its topic from several angles, including religion and science, religion and healing, religion and women, religion and the media and the relation between religion and &#8220;spirituality.&#8221; Sharma, 65, himself a Hindu from Varanasi, India, who has studied and taught in that country, Australia and the United States (largely at Harvard University), thinks the conference will face some of its biggest challenges in wrestling with different Eastern and Western concepts of human rights and of religion itself.
