The political leaders, including Deputy Minister of Communications Roy Padaychee, who was representing President Thabo Mbeki, offered floral tributes to the Swami.<\/p>\n<p>Swami Sahajananda, who died yesterday at the age of 82, was initiated into Sannyas by Swami Sivananda in 1956. He was best known for his nearly 60 years of contributions as head of the Divine Life Society of South Africa, which is engaged in building schools, technical colleges, clinics, small businesses and even churches for the poor and disadvantaged in KwaZulu-Natal. Swami had been responsible for more than 300 such projects.<\/p>\n<p>In his message, President Mbeki said: &#8220;The Divine Life Society of South Africa has stood out as one of the beacons of this country. Swami Sahajananda has dedicated his life to serve the poorest of the poor in our country. His contribution for about 58 years is praiseworthy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the Swamiji&#8217;s ashes, after his cremation, were submerged in the Indian Ocean by the South African shore.
