The huge anti-government protests on the streets of Kuala Lumpur shook the foundation of the Malaysian government, a country where few dare to protest against the state. Now, after the tough crackdown the government has adopted conciliatory approach.

However, 26 Indians still face the lesser charge of causing mischief and illegal assembly, while five others are still under detention under the controversial Internal Security Act that allows indefinite detention without trial. An NGO called the Hindu Rights Action Force had given a call for the rally in November to protest against discrimination by the government. Ethnic Indians are one of the largest ethnic group in Malaysia, but on the margins of the country’s progress. The government denies Indians are discriminated.

According to one study, Indians make up five per cent of the civil service now, compared to 21.5 per cent in 1969. But in the last few years, the biggest discontent among the Hindu Indians is what they see as Malaysia’s increasing Islamisation, infringing on their religious rights, and many Hindu temples have been demolished by the state on the grounds that they are illegal structures.

While the dropping of murder charges may assuage the feelings of ethnic Indians for now but in the long term the crisis is clearly not over.

www.ndtv.com NEW DELHI, INDIA, December 17, 2007: Prosecutors in Malaysia today dropped attempted murder charges against 31 ethnic Indians, who,…

[1

post-6478","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
