The NGOs point out that by virtue of an amendment to the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules, 1955, the central government has officially recognized vegetarianism as the benchmark for a &#8220;healthy diet.&#8221; The amendment stipulates that non-vegetarian food-items should carry an indication, by way of a symbol and red color code displayed just above the brand name of nonvegetarian products.
